On Being a Grandma: You Know You’re a New Grandma When…

Thanks for Sharing!

Being a Grandma is so exciting!  And falling into the role is easy.  I can tell you from experience, it’s something you can’t even imagine…  The way you feel and act – it all changes…  You can tell you have it right when these things happen to you.  You know you’re a  Grandma when…

You Know You’re a First-Time Grandma When:

Being a Grandma is an awesome gig!

Have you ever wondered if you’re doing it right?

Well, no one ever does it all perfectly, but if you can relate to any of the following, you may be on track.

Try your best, give it everything you have to give, and most importantly, LOVE them!

Passing Down the Love to the next generation!

If you have any doubts, here it is.

You’ll know you’re a new Grandma when these begin to happen:

You Know you’re a New Grandma When:

YOU GO SHOPPING

You start hunting for baby accessories the day you find out you’ll BE a Grandma even though the baby isn’t due for seven more months.

YOUR HOUSE GETS A MAKEOVER

You turn a bedroom into “The Grandkids Room”.

You know they’ll need a place to store their toys and a bed when they come to spend the night.

You hope your other guests won’t mind sleeping in the converted “guest room” with the huge Teddy Bear staring at them as they nod off.

YOU BEGIN TO PLAY AGAIN

You buy new Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels to keep at your house.

Every single toy you always wanted when YOU were a kid, or wanted for your own kids and couldn’t afford “back in the day”.

It’s game on.  Now you have a license to play.

You Know You’re a New Grandma When:

LITTLE THINGS BECOME BIG THINGS

You treasure the handful of weeds

I mean flowers – that are lovingly picked “just for you, Grandma:”.

Too sweet!

YOU NOTICE COLORS

You buy a new 152 crayon set because

64 crayons just aren’t enough Crayola Crayons and coloring books.

And because that huge Ziploc bag full of broken crayons that you somehow still own (leftovers from their Dad’s coloring days) will never do.

The refrigerator will once again be an art wall.

HOME SAFETY IS JOB 1

You baby-proof your home.  Again.

The first time, many years ago, you did this to avoid injury to your children.

Now you do it because you NEVER want to have to call the parents from the hospital and tell them you let Baby Boy stick his finger in the outlet.

Oh, and because you really don’t want them to get hurt.

You Know You’re a New Grandma when:

ANNOYING TOYS ARE FUN AGAIN

You look forward to buying that drum set for Christmas.

You’re certainly aware of Mom & Dad’s feelings about this.

But you know it’s not going to your house this time, so somehow it seems like a great gift!

YOU FORGET THE RULES

You let your grandkids do whatever they want when they’re at your house.

Within reason, of course.

You want the trips to Grandma’s to be special – don’t let the rules get in the way of the fun!

Ok, really, have fun but know your boundaries.

YOU HAVE A NEW NAME

You turn around to answer whenever ANY kid calls out for  “grandma”.

No matter where you are, what you are doing, this is the moment you stop and say “Yes? I’m here”.

You know you’re a New Grandma when:

YOUR HUSBAND GETS A NEW NAME, TOO

You quit calling your husband “Dad” and start calling him “Grandpa” even when the two of you are alone.

YOU BEGIN TO SING

You sing that silly song a hundred times because your Grandson says “Again, Grandma, again!”.

If you know “The Other Day, I Met a Bear, well, that’s the song…

GRANDCHILDREN DO NO WRONG

You allow your grandson to put 75 – ok, maybe it was only 30 – Paw Patrol stickers on your brand new Yeti cup.

And you carry it everywhere, show your other grandparent friends, and brag about his creativity.

True Story.

YOU WATCH CARTOONS AGAIN

You have a picnic on a blanket in the living room while watching Yogi Bear cartoons on YouTube.

Remember Yogi & BooBoo?

Of course, you do if you’re a Grandma!

If not, you need to Google it and check it out.

Those old cartoons still bring waves of laughter to all of us.

YOU BECOME A PHOTOGRAPHER

You have your phone ready at a moment’s notice.

You never know when someone will ask to see a picture of your grandkids.

(You know that more than half of your pictures are of your Grands, right?)

And you wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to quickly snap some selfies when you’re having fun with your adorable munchkins.

YOU REMEMBER WHEN…

You witness a temper tantrum.

Then you secretly smile, saying “awe, just like YOU used to do….”.

This one doesn’t even require an explanation.

Finally, you know you’re a New Grandma when:

YOU FEEL THE LOVE

When those littles come running the minute they see you, give you a huge hug around the neck.

And call you Grandma.

The feelings of pride, happiness and indescribable love overtake you, leaving no doubt that you ARE indeed a Grandma.

Here’s your chance.

Tell me if any of these things sound familiar to you.

How do YOU know you’re a Grandparent?
